Use it for bedroom wardrobes, study tables, loft storage, and any dry interior application. Do not use it in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas, or coastal homes where ambient humidity stays above 70% for weeks at a time.
BWR uses Phenol Formaldehyde (PF) resin- a stronger, more moisture-stable adhesive than UF. It handles sustained indoor humidity and occasional moisture contact without delaminating. This is the practical default grade for most Indian home furniture.
Use it for living room furniture, TV units, kitchen wall cabinets, bedroom furniture in coastal cities, and any room where monsoon humidity regularly spikes. It is not for direct water contact under-sink cabinets and bathroom vanities need BWP, not BWR.
BWP uses undiluted PF resin the highest-grade adhesive available. It is tested to survive 72 continuous hours of boiling water without delamination. This is the only genuinely waterproof plywood grade in India. It is darker in colour than MR or BWR due to the PF resin throughout the layers.
Mandatory for kitchen base cabinets, under-sink storage, bathroom vanities, and any application with direct or regular water contact. Also the correct specification for coastal homes, high-humidity zones, and any furniture expected to last 20+ years in challenging conditions.
Marine plywood is BWP grade with two additional requirements: a void-free core (no internal gaps between veneers) and denser hardwood species throughout. This eliminates the weak spots that normal BWP boards may contain at the core. It is the strongest and most moisture-resistant plywood available in India.
Correct for outdoor furniture, balcony applications, boat construction, and any situation requiring absolute waterproofing with structural load-bearing capacity. Costs significantly more than standard BWP — justify the premium only where structural integrity under moisture stress is critical.
FR plywood starts as standard plywood and is treated through vacuum pressure impregnation with flame-retardant chemicals primarily diammonium hydrogen phosphate. This does not make it fireproof. It slows flame spread by up to 70%, reduces smoke density by 30%, and gives occupants more evacuation time.
Required by building codes for hospitals, hotels, theatres, railway coaches, and commercial kitchens. Increasingly specified by architects for high-rise apartments and co-working spaces. Surface-coated "FR" products without IS 5509 certification are not genuinely compliant always verify the IS 5509 stamp and BIS licence.
Shuttering plywood is used as concrete formwork- the temporary mould into which concrete is poured during construction. It is not designed for furniture or interiors. It has a film-faced surface that allows clean concrete release and is rated for multiple reuse cycles (typically 8-2 pours).
Do not use shuttering plywood for furniture or interior applications. It is dimensionally less precise than furniture-grade plywood, uses coarser core veneers, and its surface is optimised for concrete release not finishing. It is the cheapest plywood by price but entirely wrong for any non-construction application.
Decorative plywood has a pre-applied finish on the face natural wood veneer, high-pressure laminate, or decorative film. It eliminates the separate laminating step in furniture manufacturing and gives a consistent, ready-to-use surface straight from the manufacturer.
Used for exposed surfaces in premium furniture, modular units, and interior wall panelling where a natural wood grain or patterned finish is required without additional finishing cost. The core is typically MR or BWR grade specify accordingly based on where the piece will be used.

Is 12mm plywood strong enough to walk on?
12mm plywood can support adult weight when properly supported but the answer depends on the span between supports. 12mm is used for internal shelves in wardrobes and can carry moderate loads. For typical Indian home flooring or mezzanine decking, 18mm BWR or BWP grade is the correct specification for spans up to 600mm between supports.
